TELEPHONES INSTALLED
WAITING LIST REDUCED MATERIALS FROM ENGLAND During the last week the waiting list of residents requiring telephones in Auckland has been reduced by half. The necessary materials have arrived from England and the department hopes that in a few weeks’ time the whole of the telephones will have been installed. Previously the installation of telephones in Auckland was held up because of the impossibility of getting the necessary materials from England. Since this arrived by recent ships the mechanics of the department have been busily engaged in fitting up the telephones. Each district throughout the city and suburbs has received its fair proportion of the new telephones. The growth of the telephone during the last few years in Auckland has been remarkable, and there are now over 14,000 subscribers connected with the central telephone exchange. Additions to the present exchange are nearing completion in Wellesley Street, but as the building has been planned to meet emergencies for years ahead the whole of it will not be needed for some time.
