WEST END OARSMEN ROW EVENING TRIALS

EXCITING RACE FELTON IN SLASHING FINAL Trial fours were rowed by the West End Rowing- Club last evening for the Airs. John Clark Shield. There were four crews nominated. Water conditions were splendid and some fine racing was witnessed. The form displayed by most of the oarsmen showed a vast improvement. Starting was by mutual consent, while Mr. W. Conway, senr., officiated as judge. First Heat. —A. C. Norden (stroke), G. Dowling, E. R. Strange, F. J. Bryan, Foley Orrel (cox) lost to J. W. Haylock (stroke), V. Macfarlane, Floyd Conway, P. Soufflot, G. Dowling (cox). The crews got away to a good start, but Haylock quickly assumed the lead. Rounding the buoys he had about two lengths advantage. This he increased to about four lengths in the run to the post, winning fairly comfortably. Second Heat. —J. Skinner (stroke), J. Stratton, K. Newdick, R. Ford, G. Dowling (cox) beat O. Felton (stroke), R. Woodside, R. Macey, C. Parvin, Foley OrreP (cox). This was a better race. Both crews kept well together till they had rounded the buoys. Here Skinner began to gain a slight lead. In the run for home Felton’s crew was unfortunately fouled by a sculler, #vho should not have been on the course. Skinner went on to win by a couple of lengths, but, however, the officials declared it no race, and wisely grouped Skinner, Felton and Haylock in the final. This was undoubtedly one of the finest races seen over the club’s new course this season. All got away to a splendid start, and raced practically even to the buoys. Here Felton and Haylock had a slight advantage on Skinner. Felton increased his lead rounding the buoys, and when they lined up for the final sprint to the finish he had a length on Haylock, who had a similar distance on Skinner. All crews went all out to the post, and in a splendid finish Felton got the verdict by a short length, with Haylock a similar distance in front of Skinner. REGATTA CREWS ALTERED The club’s regatta crews have suffered minor alterations. In the open maiden fours R. Macey has replaced R. Snowden (transferred to 'Wellington). The crew is now: J. Haylock (stroke), R. Macfarlane, L. Strange, R. Macey. A junior crew has new been got together, which with training, should develop into a fine crew. The crew is: C. Felton (stroke), G. Bloxham, G. Conway, G. Dowling, O. Felton and G. Bloxham will row in the junior pair-oar events. AUCKLAND TRIALS BYGATE WINS OVER MILE The Auckland Rowing Club yesterday began a series of evening trials, racing being conducted over a mile course, on which there was excellent water. The start was off Orakei, and the finish near the root of the eastern tidedeflector. The crews were: G. Cleal (str.), J. McComish, H. Goldwater. A. Ross. It. Stacey (str.), R. Martin, G. Jonson, F. Brand. J. Bygate (str.). R. Mahon, K. Duck, R. Chappell. Breaking to an even start, the crews hit water together and after settling down, Cleal and Stacey were first to nose out. Bygate, at the stroke-oar for the first time, trailed to the quartermile, where he clapped the pace on judiciously, to take a half-length lead from Cleal, who was a canvas ahead of Stacey. Bygate maintained his steady beat, and at the Parnell baths | was 1* lengths in front of Cleal, with Stacey trailing the field. Cleal quicki eneri and caught half a length on the | leaders, but in the last pinch Bygate | went away again, and Stacey beat ! Cleal for second place. Finishing two lengths ahead. Bygate, who had a ! solid crew behind him, rowed with ! creditable judgment. Another heat will !be rowed to-night.
