Transport Relief for the Suburbs
GOVERNMENT ACTION MR. COATES’S PROMISE (THE SUX’S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, To-day. Immediate relief was the essential request of a deputation representing the suburban local bodies outside the area of Auckland Crty Council which waited on the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, and the Hon. K. S. Williams, Minister of Public Works to-day respecting the unsatisfactory position of transport in the northern city. The deputation was not open to the ress, but the statement made after.cards indicated that it is evident that Mr. Coates has been convinced of the necessity for urgent action to remove :he discontent which he admits exists In Auckland suburbs on account of the nadequacy of the transport services. The most was made of the deputaon’s case, Mr. V. H. Potter and Mr. I. G. R. Mason introducing the repremtatives to the Ministers. Mr. Coates promised to negotiate immediately with the City Council with a view to providing temporary relief to bridge the gap between the present position and the time when the question of formation of a Transport Control Board for Auckland is definitely settled, the Prime Minister already having promised to go into this.
If immediate action is taken it probably will mean that temporary services will be provided for those from whom feeder services have been withdrawn, and who live ia long streets without tram or bus services to connect with transport on the city routes.
