GUARANTEE REQUIRED
. EXTENDING CORNWALLIS WHARF HARBOUR BOARD MEETS Until a guarantee far £IOO towards the cost of extending Cornwallis Wharf is received, the Auckland Harbour Board will not proceed with the work. This decision was arrived at at the meeting yesterday, following a letter from the Mayor of Onehunga, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, stating that the residents and sporting clubs of that district had promised to find the necessary £IOO. Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, chairman, pointed out that the letter contained no guarantee. • The question of financing the Waitemata Harbour bridge was mentioned in a letter received from the Bridge Committee. It was stated that as soon as the required data had been obtained, the committee would be pleased to avail itself of the board’s offer to receive a deputation. A recommendation was received from the harbourmaster that, in order to reduce the danger of collisions between ferry steamers and other vessels in foggy weather, a by-law be enacted prohibiting all vessels except ferry steamers and launches from leaving any of the main wharves without his permission. It was the opinion of the board’s solicitors that it had no power to enact a by-law of that description.
It was decided to take no action. A list of applications for tenancies in the boat sheds at St. George’s Bay were received. It was decided that the sheds be allotted in accordance with the applications, on condition that the agreement indemnifying the board against liability for accident was signed. It was decided that the schedule of works submitted by the engineer be adopted with the addition of £5,000 for contingencies; £SOO additional for furniture and fittings at head office; and £3OO for inter-office telephones at head office.
The tender of A. W. Bryant of 11s 6£d per yard for the supply of 2,000 yards of shingle for the breastwork at Mechanic’s Bay was accepted. Acceptance was made of Messrs. Seagar Bros.’ tender of £330 for the supply of six sets of ball and socket joints for the suction dredger.
