Cyclists Stage Spectacular Events
BYRNES WINS MILE KEEN RACING « The cycle races held in eonji nction with the Auckland Centre’s A.A.A. championships on Saturday were the features of the afternoon's sport. In the half-mile handicap event, the handicapper’s opinion, and the judge’s placings differed greatly, the limit riders filling the three places. The one-mile championship of Auckland was looked upon as a good thing for M. P. Byrnes, and so it proved. Byrnes won fairly easily at the finish, beating C. Galbraith by two lengths. The racing taken on the whole during the afternoon was good, and with the exception of a few offenders who would insist on looking round, the meeting was splendidly conducted. Following are the results: THREE-MILE OPEN HANDICAP First heat: Lichfield, 220yds, 1; Taylor, 260yds, 2; Robinson, 310yds, 3. Nine started. Won by two lengths. Wade fell, bringing down Byrnes, when both were in a winning position. Time, Smin 11 2-ssee. Second heat: Foubister, 160yds, 1; Baird, ISOyds, 2; Pinker, 230yds, 3. Eleven started. Foubister cleared right away from the field at four laps to go, and won easily by 20 lengths. Time, Smin. Final: Baird, ISOyds, 1; Foubister, 160yds, 2; Lichfield, 220yds, 3. Six started. Baird caught the .field in two laps with the exception of Rollinson, 314yds, Foubister, 160yds, on his own, losing ground for five laps. At two miles to go the whole field was together. When the bell rang Lichfield looked the winner, but Baird, finishing brilliantly, won a good race by two lengths, a length between second and third. Time, Bmin 29sec. ONE-MILE AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP (Holder: M. P. Byrnes) First heat: Foubister, 1; Dwight, 2; Byrnes, 3. Eight started. Won by a length and a-half, a half-length between second and third. Time, 2min 43sec. Second heat: Wade, 1; Galbraith, 2; Mathieson, 3. Seven started. This was •the fastest heat. Wade won by a length, riding a fine race. Time, 2min 37 2-ssec. , Final: Byrnes, 1; Galbraith, 2; Wade, 3. Wade did two and three-quarter laps out of the four in the lead, spoiling his chance. Byrnes won by two lengths, a length between second and third. Time, 2min 37 2-ssec. HALF-MILE OPEN HANDICAP First heat: O’Connell, 100yds, 1; Dwight 55yds, 2; Baird, 80yds, 3. Five started.’ The winner ied all the way and won by a length. A good race for second and third place. Time, lmin 8 3-ssec. Second heat: Kelly, 120yds, 1; Wade. 20yds, 2; Whitten, 45yds, 3. Seven started. Kelly led for the full distance, winning by a narrow margin. Wade rade the best race of the clay in this heat, juJt missingfirst place on the line. Time, lmin Ssec. Third heat: Welsh, 120yds, 1; Lichfield, 55yds, 2; A. Baird. 40yds, 3. Seven started. Welsh won all the way. Lichfield put up a good ride for second place. Time, lmin 8 4-ssec. Fourth heat: Culpan, 110yds, 1; Taylor, 60yds, 2; Gore, 35yds, 3. Seven started. Culpan passed Clarke, 140yds, entering the last lap, winning by a length. Time, lmin 9 3-ssec. Fifth heat: George, 110yds, 1; Pinker, 55yds, 2; MeCallum, 90yds, 3. George won easily by three lengths. Time, lmin 6 3-ssec. Six started. Final: George, 110yds, 1; O’Connell, 100yds, 2; Culpan, 110yds, 3. Also started: Pinker, 55yds; Kelly, 120yds; Welsh, 120yds. Welsh led till 204 yards from the finish. George then went to the front and won easily. Time, lmin 6sec.
