EXPLORING NORTH SHORE
LITTLE-KNOWN BEAUTIES
SHELTERED BAYS AND BUSH Everybody knows Milford, Takapuna and Cheltenham. But how many have explored the delights of the lesserknown and unfrequented bays of the North Shore peninsula? Here are many pleasant places, and the North Shore Expansion League is inviting city dwellers to discover them. In addition to the seven bays and their glorious beaches on the Rangitoto Channel coast, there are a round dozen of delightful beaches and picnic grounds on the harbour frontage. Besides these there are the secluded picnic grounds along Hellyers, Kaipatiki and Lucas Creeks. NATIVE BUSH ALSO Some fine patches of native bush are open to the public. Kauri Gully, at Northcote, is among the better-known, but Le' Roy’s Bush and the Kauri Park at Binkenhead, Smith’s Bush at Takapuna, and Whiteford’s Forest, just beyond Glenfield, are spots hardly known to Aucklanders. The league is arranging special excursions on the ferry steamers at a return fare of 6d. The league has made arrangements for motorists to share in the benefits by securing half-rate on the vehicular ferries. GOOD MOTOR ROADS There are some entrancing motor trips on good roads to be explored. The spin from Birkenhead through Birkdale, the strawberry garden of New Zealand, Beach Haven, continuing via Northcote, Milford, Takapuna and Devonport, eclipses any of the familiar Sunday afternoon trips about the city. The North Shore boasts that it can command the finest panoramic views of Auckland and its far-flung environs, but there is keen controversy as to whether the view from the trig station at Glenfield or that from Crown liill beyond Takapuna is the finer. A superb view of the Waitakeres. including a wide expanse of cosy farmland is obtained from the entrance to Whiteford Forest on the Albany Road. To the city motorist tired of the 10mile run to Henderson and of the journey to Manurewa, the prospects of new runs on the North Shore will be alluring. The first excursions are planned for November 19 and 20, Saturday and Sunday.
