WATER AND WORRY

PUMPS AT DEVONPORT “This delay in getting the pumping plant running has been a great worry to me and a loss of money to the borough,” declared the Mayor of Devonport last night, when a letter was read from the firm that installed the electric motors for the new pumps repudiating any liability for charges for current for which the council has had to pay since October 1, though it has not been able to use the new plant. The engineer to the borough reported that the 12£ h.p. primary pumps that feed the well from which the 25 h.p. main pumps lift the water could not keep the big pumps fed. The plan was to switch over one of the old pumps to help feed the well. This meant changing a pulley. It would have to be done on some day other than a Monday, when the reservoir was severely taxed. Several members considered that the council had now lost more money than would have bought a new pump. It was resolved that the contractors have the necessary change made by Friday or the borough’s men would do the work. The engineer stated tlitit preliminary tests showed that there were no mechanical troubles. He had arranged for a tested meter to be put in and sufficient tests made as to the capacity of the pumps.
