NEWMARKET PROTESTS

TRAMWAYS STOPS CUT OUT “TREATMENT UNFAIR” The action of the Tramways Committee in eliminating certain stops on tram routes, without first consulting local bodies, was protested against at the meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council last evening. j The authorities concerned had been particularly unfair to Newmarket, said I the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson. They had ! eliminated the two boundary stops at j Mortimer Pass and George Street, i Ever since the tramways had come into being the stops had been in existence, and suited the convenience of scores of people. A grave injury had been done in removing the stops. As an act of courtesy, local bodies should have been approached. He moved that the City Council be written to protesting against the unfair action. Mr. H. J. Cooper said that all the factories were about George Street, and the taking out of that stop would inconvenience many workers. Although they did not own the tramways they helped to keep them, said Mr. G. E. Smerdon. The action did j not find general favour with the public, j The Mayor agreed with Mr. Smer- j don, and said that the tramways sys- i tern was not as good as the public j would like it to be. In his opinion the j recent action was not going to bring j about good feeling between the public j and the Tramways Committee. In- : stead it was tending to antagonise the ! public. It was decided to protest against the j action of the tramways authorities.
