ONE TREE HILL FLOODS

TAWERA ROAD NUISANCE BOARD TO TAKE ACTION Tiie question of flooding in Momona Road and Tawera Road again came up for discussion at the meeting- of the One Tree Hill Road Board last evening. The engineer said that he had gone into the question several times during the last six years, and in his opinion the only practicable -way to relieve the residents of this area from flooding was to carry the water from the outlet of the tunnel drain on Mr. Wright’s property to the culvert going underneath the Great South Road, through an 18inch reinforced concrete pipe. The pipe would require to be composed of reinforced concrete in order to withstand the pressure which would be imposed upon it when the tunnel drain is runningfull. In addition to this pipe, it is also necessary that an overflow chamber be constructed on Mr. Wright’s property, with another IS-inch reinforced concrete pipe leading from it to a soak-hole which was constructed in Tawera Road some years ago. He estimated that the cost of this work would be £B3O. The board decided that as it did not have control over the tunnel drain, it could not finance the scheme. If the residents of the district are willing to pay half, it will put the work in hand. The clerk was asked to notify the residents of the district, and report at the next meeting of the board. The board also decided to call tenders for installing a new storm-water drain in Ranfurly Road. The engineer’s estimate for this work was £3lO 15s. The building inspector reported that during the last fortnight nine building permits have been issued, six being for dwellings valued at £5,225, two for garages valued at £7O, and one for a washhouse valued at £4O. making a total of £5,335. Tenders were received for levelling the Mount St. John crater for a. sports area, but as all -were over £9O, the board decided not to accept any. The sum of £4O has been set aside for this work, and Mr. H. B. Dobbie and J. S. TTard-wic-ke were authorised to spend it to the best advantage. The engineer reported that, with the exception of the two crossings at Garland Road and Waiohua Road respectively, the whole of the concrete pavement on the Great South Rond has been laid. The road is open for traffic from Greenparlc Road to Waiohua Road on both sides, and from Waiohua Road to the Harp of Erin on one side only. Practically no Inconvenience is now suffered by through traffic. It ts expected that the whole of the road will be opened to traffic at the beginning of next month.
