SHOOTING AT RETARUKE
MATCH IN THE SNOW The Kins Country Sporting Gun Club held another'very successful meet on the property of Mr. X. Dempsey, senr., at Retaruke, when Mr. and Mrs. Dempsey entertained over 40 guests at afternoon tea. In view of the fact that heavy snow had fallen at Raurimu and there was rain at Retaruke. the popularity of the newlv-formed club was evidenced by the large attendance. Two matches were tired, the results being:—Mr. Geary’s silver cup: I. Rutherford, 9 kills, 1: L. Person, 2; I McKay 3. Cockles’ bottle match: P. Rutherford 1, T. McFadyen 2, I. Rutherford 3. The next “shoot” will take place on November 13. at Mr. Shires's farm, and the club's ball has been fixed for November 5. Of late years little or no interest has been taken in rifle shooting in the Taumarunui district, though a fairly strong Defence Rifle Club existed here a few rears ago. The Defence Department has been approached tor permission to disband the X. pper King Country Rifle Club, and the secretary, Mr. R. F. Harris, has received from Major Glendinning. officer in charge of No. 4 Regimental District, advice that the suggestion to disband has been approved. and that it will take effect from November 30. 1927. unless the Defence Department receives objections to this course prior to that date.
