FARMERS PROTEST
TARIFFS OBJECTED TO At a well attended meeting of the Waikiekie branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, the secretary was instructed to send the following letter of protest to the Prime Minister: “I am instructed to enter a most emphatic protest against the rise in protective customs tariff. It must be recognised that as the farmers are the only section of the community who cannot pass the burden on in the ordinary course of business, they have to pay tlie whole taxation. Some of the manufacturing concerns who are getting the benefit of the tariff protection have been in existence a very long time and had the benefit of the boom prices, when farmers’ produce was commandeered. If they cannot stand on their own feet now they never will. We, as a body of graziers and dairy farmers, only ask for a fair deal, but do not think the present customs taxation comes under that heading.”
