EX-SERVICEMEN’S SCHEME
MOUNT. ALBERT DEPUTATION A deputation from the New Zealand Ex-Service League to the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening asked permission to hold a flag- day in the borough for the purpose of raising money for the relief of unemployed ex-servicemen. Money collected in Mount Albert would be spent in the borough only. The Mayor, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, stated that the council was out to do its best for the relief of unemployment, and was doing more than ever before in its history. It was spending £ 30.-000 more than it otherwise would have done. The question was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee to report. That committee recommended that the council make a grant of £2OO toward work for unemployed at the Morningside Reserve; also that a relief fund be opened, to be subsidised by the Government if possible, the money to be expended on development work on the reserve. It was decided that subscription lists be opened in various parts of the district and also that application be made to the Play Association for assistance out of its collections.
