CUPS FOR FIREMEN
OTAHUHU TROPHY AGAIN NORTH SHORE COMPETITIONS In 1918 the business men and citizens of Otahuhu, in a laudable effort to promote competitions among members of fire brigades, so that efficiency should be kept up, subscribed to buy a silver cup. The award was to be made for a three-men coupling (dry) event, and was to be competed for by the various volunteer brigades around Auckland
In 1918 Onehunga won the event, but the slack years after the war led to the abandonment of the competitions until 1921, when Devonport Municipal Fire Brigade took the trophy. Since them the cup has remained in possession of the Devonport firefighters simply because no competition has been arranged by the local brigades’ association. In the interim, Onehunga has passed out of the volunteer class, and Devonport hopes that competitions for the cup will be revived.
The tendency of people in the four marine boroughs across the Waitemata to act together, instead of regarding each others’ territory as foreign country, is further exemplified by the scheme to have .a joint fire brigades’ annual sports this year, instead of one at Devonport, 'one at Takapuna, and another at Birkenhead-Northcote. A North Shore championship event is to be established, and a handsome cup for competition has been donated by Fireman R. Fletcher, who has just quitted the Devonport Brigade to go to the South Island. The cup is for a two-man event.
