SPLENDID RACING AT GREYMOUTH

N.Z. CUP FAVOURITE WINS CHIEF EVENT ON THE WEST COAST GREYMOUTH, Monday. THE Greymouth Trotting Club’s spring meeting opened in fine weather and there was a large attendance. The track was in good order. The totalisator handled £14,161, compared with £10,713 10s on the first day last year. The weather for the opening day. which was postponed from Saturday, was in strange contrast to that of the week-end, and the track had dried up quickly. The racing was of a high order, a feature of the contests being the success of Canterbury-trained horses, seven of the eight events being won by representatives from across the ranges. The Thistle, trained by Vic Alborn at Reefton, was the only Coaster to secure a first certificate. Chief interest was centred on the Greymouth Handicap, in which four New Zealand Cup candidates took part, the Coast champion, Golden Devon, being the other starter. It proved a good trial for the Cup horses, and the present favourite, Cardinal Logan, who. strange to say, was the outsider of the field, won in good style. He gained many' friends for the big November event.
