County's Support For Power Loan
MOTION REFUSED WAITEMATA PROPOSAL “It is utterly ridiculous, and 1 refuse to take the motion,” said Mr. H. Day, chairman of the Waitemata County Council, yesterday. THE motion, proposed by Mr. .T. Mackie, was to the effect that the council should support the Waiiemata Power Board’s prop isal to raise a loan of £ SO,OOO for reticulation purposes. Contending that th< : an ■ - o interest to the ratepayers, Air. Mackie urged that members should take a broad view of the scheme. He considered that the ultimate result of further reticulation would be closer settlement, with a corresponding increase in the council's revenue. The chairman contended that the motion was out of order. The council should not advise the ratepayers on the question. If members desired to support it they could do so on the public platform. Upon Mr. Mackie further urging the benefits that would result from the carrying of the poll the chairman intimated with some heat his refusal to accept the motion. Mr. A. E. Diprose supported Mr. Mackie. “The council’s approval.” he said, “would mean the progress o£ the county." Mr. G. H. O’Halloran saw no reason why the scheme should not be recommended to the ratepayers. He thought the moral support would be considerable.
The chairman still refusing to accept the motion, the discussion lapsed.
