HAURAKI ROADS

PROVISION FOR METALLING

Some finality has been reached, as the result of much negotiation by the chairman of the Hauraki Plains County Council, Councillor E. L- Walton, in the long-standing, dispute as to the metalling of those few roads in the Crown area which were not metalled by the Lands Drainage Department, with the others, when the settlement was opened many years ago.

At last week's meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council advice was received from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams, that a £ for £ subsidy up to £9,900 would be provided from the Public Works fund, and the Ministry of Lands was prepared to provide a similar subsidy, which would equal a contribution of £2 for £l, provided the county council raised a loan for its share, namely £9,900. The roads to the metalled, and the cost, were; Moehau Street, Pipiroa township. £1,050; Hopai Road extension. £2,400; Hawerawe-Ngatea, £1,700; Ngatea West, £2.200; NgateaKaihere landing, £9,750; Puhanga canal, east side, £3.500; Kaikahu Road, Kerepeehi, £3,300: Ngataipua Road, Ivopuaralii, £4,500; Kaihere (Ngarua boundary to Morrinsville Road), £1,100; total, £29.700

The conditions under which the £19,800 would be provided were that, the Government contributions would be provided from time to time as finances permit, and that the county council must give an undertaking to set aside a specific sum, which will he named by the district Public Works Department engineer, each year, for the efficient maintenance of the roads metalled.

The following sums have been provided on this year’s estimates, and if funds permit will be available for expenditure: Moehau Road, on account of £4OO, £2OO subsidy: Ngataipua East Road, on account of £3,000, subsidy £100; Ngatea-Kaihere, on account of £6,500, subsidy £125. Councillors warmly congratulated the chairman on the satisfactory result he had achieved, and resolved that it be placed on record. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to forward letters to Messrs. A. M. Samuel and T. W. Rhodes, M.P.’s, voicing appreciation of their assistance.
