COUNTRY TENNIS
ANNUAL CLUB MEETINGS
The Waitakaruru Tennis Club held its annual meeting last week, Mr. A. H. McLean presiding over a fair attendance. The balance sheet showed a small credit balance on the year’s working, a large sum having been handed over to the Domain Board, on whose land the courts are situated. Officers appointed were as follow; President, Mr. A. 11. McLean; secretary, Mr. D. Molesworth; delegate to the" l-lauraki Plains Tennis Association, Mr. A. H. McLean; committee, Messrs. G. L. Griffiths, R. McKay, W. Morgan. A. Otter, and the officers; ladies’ committee, Mesdames Olsen, Elliott, Hunter, and Miss U. Thompson. No decision was reached in regard to the method to be adopted this season by the tennis association for its inter-club competitions, but the club was of opinion that the number of matches should be reduced, so as to encourage those members who were not in the teams. Affiliation with the newly-formed Thames "Valley Tennis Association was favoured. It was decided to have one of the clay courts treated with bitumen, and to -bring the chip court into good order November 5 was fixed as the official opening day. The Hopai Tennis Club also held its annual meeting last week, and appointed the following officers: President, Mr. A. R. Vowles; vice-president, Mr. A. E. Wade; secretary, Mr- W. E Murphy; match committee, Messrs. Vowles. Wade, and Murphy: delegate to the Hauraki Plains Tennis Association, Mr. A. R. Vowles; committee. Messrs. L. M. Murray, D. Murphy, S Coppins, and the officers. The delegate to the association was instructed to oppose the proposal to break away from the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association for the purpose of joining the newly-formed Thames Valley Association, and to support the knock-out system of playing the interclub competitions. It was thought that the teams which were knocked out of the inter-club competition could play an eliminatinng round for the Howell Williams Memorial Shield competition, as this competition had rather languished of recent years on account of insufficient playing days. November 12 was fixed for the official opening day.
