RURAL COUNTIES

CONFERENCE REMITS Members of the Matamata County Council were extremely critical of several permits passed by the Rural Counties Conference at Hamilton, when a copy was read for their information. Most of the remits were very favourably received, that for a reduction of rail freights on metal being hailed with cries of “carried unanimously.’’ Opposition was expressed to several remits, however, the proposal to make the party whose name appeared in the occupiers column of the valuation roll at April 1 primarily responsible for all rates, receiving the brunt. Cr. Cox held that the Rural Counties Conference had not exactly excelled itself. Cr. Darby: It’s truly rural (laughter.) Continuing, Cr. Darby held the whole thing was weak in that no illustrations to the remits were given. The Chairman: They were given at the meeting. Cr. Darby: Yes, but they are not given now. The Department won’t know what we are driving at. The whole thing is weak, and I think none but carefully-considered remits should have been allowed to go forward, as the weak ones only spoil our chances with the others. (Hear, hear.) The chairman admitted that in regard to one remit only the mover and chairman seemed to thoroughly understand it. The chairman of the conference had said it was right, and it went through, though he himself had not seen the point. (Laughter.)
