ROTORUA FUNCTION

PUBLIC SERVICE DANCE The South Auckland branch of the Public Service Association held its annual social in the Peerless Hall, Rotorua, on Wednesday evening, when soir.e 90 couples occupied their leisure hours in dancing and cards. The “K” Boys’ Orchestra supplied delightful music for those who indulged in the light fantastic, while the card tourneys were in the capable hands of Mr. A. Rees George (bridge) and Mr. H. (Bud) Fitzgerald (five hundred). In the five hundred tournament honours fell to Mrs. Willmott 1, Mrs. Tuck 2, in the women’s section, and Mr. Pennington 1, and Miss Taylor (who played as a man, won in the men’s section. The travelling prize was annexed by Mr. Riddell. In the bridge section Mr. A. Rees George 1, and Miss McPherson 2, annexed the trophies. The waltzing competition was won by Mr. and Mrs. W. Penno. The Monte Carlo saw Mr. F. Smith and Miss Owens left in pride of place, while Mr. H. Parata and Miss Tucker were successful in the spot dance. The lucky entrance ticket was annexed by Mr. W. Penno. Mr. H. J. Hmpen act€‘d in the capacity of “overseer,” while Mr. R. Ewing carried out the duties of secretary*. After supper Judge A. G. Holland, in a neat speech, apologised for the absence of the chairman of the section's excutive, Mr. W. Hill, on account of indisposition. He conveyed the thanks of the association to the social committee, who had worked arduously to milk© the function such an undoubted success, and also to the women’s committee, which served a tasty supper. Laudatory evidence of their efforts was heard on all sides. He regretted the absence of many of the heads of departments, stressing the point that to obtain co-operation in their daily occupations it vyas just as necessary for officers to unite socially.
