FARMERS’ PROTEST (Special to THE SUN.) NELSON, "Wednesday. At a meeting of the Nelson executive of the Provincial Farmers’ Union the following resolution, protesting against the arbitrary destruction of private property with regard to the demolition of hawthorn hedges, was passed:— “That this provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union desires to assist the fruitgrowing industry in combating the ravages of fireblight r by the gradual eradication of hawthorn, but emphatically protests against the arbitrary destruction of private property without compensation. That in view of the immense amount of hawthorn in the Nelson district this executive respectfully asks the Minister of Agriculture to visit Nelson with the object of a personal inspection and of meeting the Farmers’ Union committee.”
