MULTITUDES’ MUSIC

DUTY ON RECORDS LIFTED BRITISH TO BE FREE (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. By an alteration in the duty on gramophone records imported into New Zealand, providing that British records are -now free and foreign records bear-" ing ; 20 per cent., the Government :is suffering a loss of over £20,000 annually. Hitherto the duties were 20 per cent, for British and 40 per cent, on the foreign articles. In explaining this to the House of Representatives to-day the Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, said users of gramophones had asked for this, as the wireless sets were coming in free, and they wished for similar concessions. This alteration, which operates from July 1, 1928, was acclaimed by several members of the House as a splendid thing for all concerned, particularly those in the country districts, who seldom bad the opportunity of hearing a concert.
