TROTTING

(By “ABAYDOS.") SPRING HANDICAP NINE GOOD PERFORMERS HAROLD THORPE WITHDRAWS Four failures to accept has reduced the field in the £I,OOO heat next Saturday to nine, a handy field. Those engaged are a useful lot and include two New Zealand Cup candidates, Talaro and Imprint, and a dual New Zealand Cup winner, Ahuriri. The presence of this trio will add keen interest to the event, and though

there is a general opinion that the winner is here concealed, it must nol be forgotten that Concliff and Taleni are on a handy mark, and the five memtioned will find it interesting endeavouring to overtake Tom Thumb.

OCTOBER HANDICAP

SOME SPEEDY MILERS AUCKLAND’S HOPE Five defections from the October Handicap, the heat next Saturday for speedy milers, leaves 12 runners to compete for the prize, and it should prove a stirring contest. Ben Lomond has the front to himself, and if he is all right on the day will set a merry pace and give those at the rear something to do for seven furlongs. Jewel Pointer will benefit considerably by the run in the big race and will keep the opposition busy. Then comes Sea Pearl, St. Maura and Bell Harold, all great performers at -the distance. The back-markers, Talaro and Nelson Fame are close on their heels. With such a nice-sized field, so well spaced, Nelson Fame, if judiciously handled, should have a royal chance of being escorted into the enclosure by the man in red.

MOUNTAIN TROT

CLASSY SQUARE-GAITERS WAIKAHA WILL BE TESTED Although Money Spider did not elect to tackle his task of conceding such top-notch square-gaiters as Waikaha, Betty Moko, Young Blake and Trampfast, three, four and five seconds, respectively in the Mountain Trot, the event will still be one of the finest and sternest battles of the day. There are several other useful competitors in the heat, who can lend colour to the contest, and add to its competitive value, but the meeting of the quartette mentioned promises to provide a scene worth travelling any distance to witness. Good as Trampfast is, his failures at Alexandra Park will discount his prospects in comparison with those of his associates, and Waikaha, Betty Moko and Young Blake look like having a battle royal for supremacy.
