AMATEUR ATHLETICS AT TE AWAMUTU
PAST YEAR REVIEWED (From. Our Own Correspondent.) TE AWAMUTU, Wednesday. There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Te Awamutu Amateur Athletic Club. Mr. A. A. Chittenden, president, presided. The chairman said it was encouraging to see such a large number present, and urged members to put their shoulders to the wheel and keep the club alive. Last year’s gathering had proved a great success and a substantial credit balance was the result. It was the intention to hold the sports early in the New Year, and it was anticipated it would be a success. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of £22 4s Bd. The actual profit on the sports meeting was £3l 3s Bd, but there were a number of accounts outstanding at the commencement of the year which had been paid off. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, the Mayor, Mr. L. G. Armstrong; president, Mr. A. A. Chittenden; vicepresidents, Messrs. G. S. Clarke F Quin, A. J. Nation, G. W. Mairs, E. G. Humphrey, C. F. McLean, A. S. Wallace and Dr. C. Blundell; secretary, Mr. F. Nesdale; treasurer, Mr. M. Barnett; auditor, Mr. G. O. Jourdain; executive committee, Messrs. D. Wallace, H. T. Haselden, G. M. Blair, C S. Mexted, C. A. Finch, J. Robinson, C. A. Reilly, T. Dalziell, R. Sinclair, G. B. Melrose, J. Clements, G. Jeffs T. Davis, C. S. McLean, M. Hunter and G. J. Arnold. It was decided that the annual subscriptions be ss, same as last year. The date of the next sports meeting was fixed for January 29, 1928, Anniversary Day. A meeting of the executive was held at the conclusion of the business meeting. A discussion arose as to the advisability of including a chopping event in this year’s programme. It was eventually decided to include this elvent with a total prize money of £SO. Messrs. G. B. Melrose, H. T. Haselden, J. Clements, A. Clements, J. Robinson. G. J. Arnold, G. Jeffs and T. Dalziell were appointed a committee to attend to details. It was stated that Mr. H. Owen had donated a cup to the club for competition, while Messrs. Kohn and Co., of Auckland, had donated a gold medal. It was agreed to hold a series of weekly evening sports meetings, the Owen Cup to be held by the competitor gaining most points, and also to be awarded the Kohn gold medal. The cup is to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals. A committee, comprising Messrs. A. A. Chittenden, G. M. Blair, F. Nesdale, G. J. Arnold and G. Jeffs, was set up to conduct the competition. Mr. G. Coverdale, Te Kawa, had also decided to donate a cup to the club to bo allotted to any event the club thought fit. The donor had also assisted the club in other ways. It; was decided that the Coverdale Cup be awarded to the competitor gaining the most points in the athletic events at the annual sports meeting.
