WAIHI SPORT
HOCKEY AND SOCCER At Waihi on Saturday in fair Aveather the Waihi girls beat Paeroa by 1 goal to nil in the semi-final for the Johnson Cup. The ground was in good condition, having dried up splendidly after the heavy rain overnight, and this gave both teams an opportunity of displaying their best form. Bright stickAvork by both sets of backs was a feature of the play, particularly that of C. Morton, the Waihi back, who stood out as the best player on the field. Time and again Miss Morton broke up the determined assaults of the Paeroa forwards when the Waihi goal seemed likely to fall, and placed the ball with precision to her own forwards. Other Waihi players to shoAV good form were Miss Carter, whose goal in the first half was a beauty, Miss Nis-. bett, Miss Weedon and for Paeroa Miss Ellis and Misses H. and G. Shand were the best. Mr. J. Hicks refereed the game. Waihi will now play Thames in the final for the cup. WAIHI SOCCER TEAM’S WIN Waihi Rovers visited Kerepeehi on Saturday and beat the home team by 4 goals to 3 in a replay for the D.C.L. Challenge Cup. The ground Avas a \ r eritable quagmire, so that good play was out of the question as the players at times sank to their boot tops in the mud. Though winning, Waihi Avas not the better team, for Kerepeehi had slightly more of the game, and particularly in the second half when its attacking Avork was almost continuous. However, it failed to avail itself of all the goaL-scoring opportunities and this cost it the game. The scorers for Waihi were Sharp (2), Robertson (1) and Coward (1), and for Kerepeehi Shilton (2), Hamms (1). Mr. Bally was the referee.
