THAMES REQUESTS
MAGISTRATE WANTED COMMUNITY LIGHTING (From Our Own Correspondent) THAMXS, To-day. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting held yesterday. Dr. J. B. Fig gins presiding, mention was made of the disability Thames was working under through not having a resident magistrate. The former magistrate, Mr. Salmond, resided at Thames, but Mr. Platts lives in Hamilton. The Justice Department is to be written to and its attention drawn to the inconvenience.
A system of community lighting was discussed and Messrs. F. W. Hetherington and J. W. Dauby were deputed to go into the movement. The Agricultural Department is to be asked to appoint a resident agriculture officer. Hamilton in the nearest office, and expert advice is at times urgently needed. It was decided to ask the borough council and county council to co-operate in the matter.
The half-holiday question came up. and members were of opinion that the Saturday half-holiday, which prevailed, was detrimental to the interests of the town. So as to enable the chamber to fully discuss the position it was left over until next meeting. The president said he had been informed that the Hauraki Bridge could be ready by Christmas time for temporary traffic, providing a few extra men are put on. The Public Works engineer at Paeroa will be asked to push the wy>rk so as to allow a crossing time.
