COMMUNIST REVOLTS. —A message from Memel states that Communist revolts have broken out in several towns in Lithuania. The Government is rushing troops to the various places concerned. —A. and N.Z. FIGHTING IN TRIPOLI.—The Italian troops in Tripoli under General Mezzetti engaged rebel tribesmen in a central mountain range. They killed 218 of them and captured 400 loaded camels. The Italian casualties were slight.—A. and N.Z.-Sun. BROKEN HILL MINERS.—The directors of the Broken Hill Proprietary mine announce that the property will be closed down about September 24. This step is to be taken owing to the low price of lead and the fact that there is no indication of a. substantial recovery. More than 1,000 men will be rendered idle.—A. and N.Z. LIBRARY AT GENEVA. —The Council of the League of Nations has accepted an unconditional offer of £400,000 from a group of Americans, in order to establish a library at Geneva for the use of the increasing number of students of international affairs who come to Geneva. —A. and N.Z.-Sun. WORK BETTER THAN-DO LE —Sir Alfred Woodgate, chairman of the West Ham Commission, says it has made work more profitable than living on the dole. The commission is reducing the rates to 4d in the £ fo~ the next six months. It has reduced the relief in six months by £500.000 and has arranged to pay the board’s debt of £2,275,000 by yearly instalments of £ 302,000. —Times. FIGHTING fX INDIA.—The recent inter-tribal fighting between the Sunnis and the Shiahs at Kalaya appears to have been on a serious scale. A tribe of Orakzai Sunnis had the assistance of Afridi Lascars numbering 20,000. The Shiahs were hopelessly outnumbered, but made a gallant fight from towers and trenches —A. and N.Z. . .
