THRILLING POLICE CHASE TO ONEHUNGA TOOK REFUGE IN CHURCH r V HE holy shelter of a church did not hide two youths from the eyes of policemen who were searching for them on Saturday night. They were found—and at the Police Court to-day they wept when charged with converting i Baby Austin car to their own use. THE tearful two were: Joseph A Robert Slater a::id Harley William Dear both aged 16. The car had been left by Mr. L. A. Wood in John Street, Ponsonbj r , late on Saturday afternoon. Its disappear ance was first noticed at 7 o’clock and llie police were notified. The car was next seen in Broadway, Newmarket, at 9,15, by two constables. THE CHASE* BEGINS The constables commandeered a passing car, and then a chase began The pursuing car raced down Manukau Road, but the young pirates hs.d a good start, and at one stage almost succeeded in eluding their pursuers. In Queer. Street.. Oriehungs, the youths again tried to throw o*f the police by putting ou: their lights, and dodging in between two parked cars. They were seen, however, and abandoning the car ; tried to escape on foot. They were found later hid ing under the Church ol: Christ When they appeared at the Police Court to-day they p.eadeci guilty. Senior-Sergeant Edwards, in asking for a remand, said there were othe: charges pending against the boys. “This is one of the hardest offences v/e have to detect,” he said. “The cars are taken, c river off, and no one is any the v/iser." Mr. Oliphant, counsel for accused. ; said they were irresponsible boys and ! he asked that their names be supj pressed The magistrate, Bfir. E. C. Cutten, refused the application, and the ac- ; cused were remanded for a week, bail 1 of £ls being allowed.
