GOVERNMENT METHODS

LEAD TO WASTE The Tauranga County Council forwarded to the Matamata County Council at Friday’s meeting a request that support be accorded a resolution urging upon the Government the necessity for users of roads to be made to bear the whole cost of maintaining same, and that owing to the steadily increasing cost of maintaining the main highways, the Government be asked to introduce legislation providing that the whole cost be paid by the Main Highways Board, thus leaving the county rates available for by-roads, all of' which were deteriorating, and thus increasing the already heavy burden of the man on the land. The chairman thought the resolution went too far, as it would tend to increase costs and lead to waste if the Government took over the roads. Cr. Judd pointed out such a resolution would lead to centralised control of roads. “It was a bit too swift.” The chairman thought the best way out was for a request to be made that the Government contribution should be increased. This idea was seconded by Cr. Cox and was agreed to unanimously by the i council.
