POST-FLOOD PARALYSIS
MISSISSIPPI REGIONS RAVAGES OF DISEASE By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright NEW YORK, Monday. The Secretary ot Commerce. Mr. H C. Hoover, has returned to the Mississippi flood regions for the first .ime since July. A message from Greenville says he was greeted by a scene of postflood paralysis. At least one-half of the country which was originally inundated is now unfit for farming. The owners of land in this area are bankrupt, and 60,000 people are still dependent on the Red Cross Society for food and clothing. Thousands of others are existing miserably and relief organisations are powerless to aid them. Disease. against which Mr. Hoover waged a fierce battle, has gained a foothold arid it is estimated that upwards of 50,000 victims are suffering from pellagra. Mr. Hoover says he is confident the situation will ultimately be remedied. It is a tremendous problem and will require a considerable time to solve. It is believed in some circles that the intervention of Congress will provide a very speedy remedy.—A. and N.Z. Pellagra Is a chronic disease of unknown cause, characterised by gastric and intestinal trouble, skin eruptions and nervous symptoms such as melancholia and mania.
