INTERPROVINCIAL TOURNEY FIRST DAY’S PLAY
The annual interprovincial tourney among the primary school boys teams for the Webster Shield opened at Victoria Park yesterday afternoon. The matches were marred by a high wind, heavy rain, and muddy surface, all of which was against good footwork or combined play.
The opening game between Wellington and Waikato was a very even struggle. Wellington scored from melee in the Waikato goal mouth, and then Millchanny made the score even. Shooting was difficult for the boys with the heavy ball, and it was just on time before Ongley gave Wellington the lead. The game ended in a well deserved win for Wellington by the odd goal in three.
The second match, between Auckland and Manawatu, provided a much brighter game, in spite of 'wretched weather conditions. Manawatu opened the scoring through a slip by Auckland’s goalie, but the holders equalised before half-time. In the second spell, with the breeze behind them, Auckland showed superior form, and ran out winners by four goals to one. The diminutive Yarndon was the outstanding player for the home team, but attempted too much at times. To-day Waikato meets Manawatu at 2 p.m., and Auckland plays Wellingat 3 p.m. on Victoria Park.
