GOOD QUALITY BEEF

WESTFIELD REVIEWED LAMBS MAKE OVER 2/- A LB. Extra prime cattle came forward at Westfield yesterday and met with a keen demand on a market slightly in advance of late rates. There was little demand for lighter and poorly-finished cattle and prices for these sorts registered no change. The sheep market was firm to slightly better than last week. An average yarding of calves saw little change in values. Pigs came forward in large numbers and values were slightly easier. Westfield seldom sees a beef yarding the quality that come forward yesterday. Several exceptionally prime lines of both steers and young cows and heifers were offered, and met with keen competition. The fact that enhanced prices were obtained, compared with the top prices at late sales, gave the impression that the market was considerably firmer. Though it certainly may have been slightly better for the better classes of cattle, there was no great improvement, the heavier cattle fully meriting the increased prices. Inferior-finished beasts, especially lighter and cull dairy sorts, met with little competition, and the market was, if anything, a little weaker. Certainly it did not register any improvement. WETHERS MAKE 44/6 Compared with last week there was a slightly smaller yarding of fat sheep and the quality generally was poor. The majority of the offering was not well finished, and many lines were fit only for the forward store pens. A limited offering of big-framed wethers met with a keen demand at values slightly in advance of last week. A line of wellfinished big-framed wethers on account F. Vosper, Hinuera, topped the market at 44s 6d. Two pens of Down-cross wethers on account G. and R. Coates, Matakohe, made to 435. Other prime wethers made to 39s 3d; light to medium prime made from 34s to 36s 9d; unfinished and small, 28s to 335. Prime ewes made to 31s 9d; lighter prime made to 265; other just billable ewes made from 20s upward; inferior stores sold from 13s. The first of the season’s lambs, four in all, came forward from W. Dueler, Maraetai, and meeting keen competition made over 2s a lb. ' HEAVY PIG YARDING A heavy yarding of pigs met with easier money. The decline was particularly noticeable in regard to porkers. Heavy choppers sold at £3 15s to £4 10s; extra heavy prime baconers up to £3 15s; heavy prime baconers, £3 7s to £3 11s; medium, £3 3s to £3 ss; light, £2 19s to £3 Is; heavy porkers, £2 15s to £2 18s; medium, £2 9s to £2 13s; light, £2 2s to £2 6s; small- and unfinished, £1 13s to £2. The stores sold readily, but values were scarcely as good as last week’s. Medium <-ondition, fair-framed made up to £1 18s; smaller, £1 13s to £1 15s; slips, £1 6s to £1 10s; good weaners, ISs to £1 4s; small and weedy, 11s to 16s.
