LIBERAL ODDS

BOOKMAKER PLUNGES INTO DISASTER FIFTEEN TO ONE THE FIELD! This is the story of an Enmore, Sydney, S.P. bookmaker, who adopted a new betting system and grew so popular that he was practically cleaned out when three favourites ran into places at Moorefield last Saturday week. Selecting three races in a programme, the bookie would bet that the punter could not pick a placed horse in each of the three. Four weeks ago he started this game, and won £2O. This made him bolder, and the next week he laid more heavily —and lost £25. Now it was the punters who gained heart, and they grew in numbers and he in daring. The third week the bookie lost £ 76. DAY OF RECKONING * News of the “punters’ gold mine” spread far and wide, and hundreds of wagers were laid at the Moorefield meeting. Of these a large number were on three favourites, Cute Bird, in the first division of the Kogarah Stakes, Rcseal, in the second division; and Bacagi in the Carlton Mile. Cute Bird and Roseal each ran third; Bacagi first. Hundreds of punters thronged the bookie’s place of business to collect. They were disappointed. “I’ve lost £550 to-day,” he told them, “and £670 in four weeks. I can’t pay you all I owe, but I’m going to do the fair thing —pay you all 75 to 1.” Most of them were satisfied with this, but many were not, and up to last night stormy interviews went on.
