The Flying Valicare
Fast gallops are expected of Valicare, and if she didn’t put up best time of the morning at Randwick the touts would ask what ailed her. But the striking thing last week about her fastest six furlongs in 1.15 was that she finished with her mouth open, pulling hard and trying to go faster. While her speed is as great as ever, she is certainly more volatile at the end of her gallops than she used to be, and this augurs well for her spring racing. Last week she didn’t begin so fast, and took 13 seconds for the first furlong, but the next she ran in lit, and she did the first five furlongs in 1.1, despite this slow start. Her speed in the middle of the gallop was remarkable. Other sprinters came only within two seconds or more of Valicare’s time for the six furlongs on the course proper, where conditions were ideal for fast work near the inside rail.
