HUNT RACING
TARANAKI RESULTS INTERESTING DAY’S SPORT (Special to THE SUN.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday. In fine weather and in the presence of a large crowd, the Taranaki Hunt Club held its annual race meeting. After much rain the going was heavy. The totalisator investments amounted to £14,203 10s, compared with £12,032 last year, an increase of £2,171 10s. W. Rennie was cautioned for an incident during the Hunters’ Steeples. McSweeney was suspended for a week for interference in the Cup Steeplechase. Just John Easily. Racing commenced with the Lepperton Hurdles, for which Lady Acre was a better favourite than Just John, and All Wind was next in demand. Lady Acre went out very fast and soon was joined by Rafa, the pair leading with a big break on the rest of the field, at the head of which was All Wind. Seven furlongs from home the leaders began to come back to the bunch, and Just John and Flowing Bowl moved forward. Just John, Lady Acre and Flowing Bowl were well clear along the back, and then Just John drew out and going on won with ease by a length. Lady Acre tired badly and was beaten by three lengths by 1 nahman, who came from well back. Waitanehau was fourth. Rafa did not last long, and finished down the course. All Wind came in very lame and Sea View lost his rider. Just John won with the greatest ease. Ladj r Acre failed to stayon in the heavy going. Hot Favourite Downed A warm favourite went under in the Opunake Scurry when Miss Mercia failed to head off Mon Desir in the run down the straight. Mon Desir got to the front almost as soon as the field was despatched, and led to the straight with a handy break on Gold Dawn, Resin and Miss Mercia. Miss Mercia made an attempt in the straight to get to Mon Desir, but failed by a length and a-half. Gold Dawn was a fair third, and Advance Camp fourth. The favourite covered a deal of extra ground, but the winner did his part all the way and earned his victory. Broad Acre fell near the winning post, but his rider, Conway, did not appear to be hurt. Maidos Improves Bettors speculated freely on the chances of Sea Comet and Maidos in the Hunters’ Handicap Steeplechase and the pair finished in the places. Maidos, Gay Paris, Paul Lucerne and Sea Comet were the leaders passing the stand the first time, but Paul Lucerne fell at the hencoop Maidos, Sea Comet and Huirangi Girl drew away from the others and passing the stands the second time, were in the lead, with Gay Paris next. Michmaelmas fell at the sod wall, and Sea Comet was left with a few lengths lead of Maidos, who, however, was going the better of the two. Maidos was with Sea Comet on the home bend, and just before the last obstacle, he came out very wide and bumped Maidos, who however, went on and won nicely by a length. Huirangi Girl was 20 lengths away third, Passport fourth and Pranfelt fifth. Denier and Hipo Backed In the Stratford Handicap, Denier and Hipo were backed better than the others. Denier began best and soon got to the front with Partaga next, and Hipo on the rails lying third. Toapaiti headed the others and Te Monanui were soon at the tail of the field. Hipo lost his position at the bend, and Monaghan drew close to Denier and Euphonium and Te Monanui made up lost ground. Monaghan came right away in the straight and won easily by three lengths from Denier. Partaga was half a length away third and Euphonium, Mint Leaf, Hipo and Te Monanui next. Hipo would have been hard to beat on a bigger course, but in any case Monaghan won well and with something in hand. Partaga should be improved by the race. Mint Leaf, Te Monanui and Euphonium all finished up their tasks well and will do better shortly. Denier had every chance but failed to nay. A Great Contest The Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase produced a great contest and an exciting finish. Banjuke was backed as a certainty and Gilgai was also well supported. Banjuke was taken to the front at the start and after a mile had been traversed he was attended by Haeremai, Oneroa, Gilgai and Sea Comet. Rayo fell at the brush fence in the straight, but was remounted and completed the course. The pace was cracked on six furlongs from home, when Haeremai dashed to the front. Banjuke and Oneroa went after him and these three and Sea Comet were together half a mile from home and Gilgai was handy. Banjuke led into the straight, but Gilgai was with him at the last fence, and Sea Comet was closing up. A great finish ensued in which Banjuke won by threequarters of a length from Gilgai, with Sea Comet finishing well only a head away. Haeremai was a poor fourth. The winner thoroughly earned his victory, and was ridden a clever race by H. McSweeney. He shied each time at the number board near the stand double, and did not jump straight at the other fences. Gilgai and Sea Comet ran right up to expectations, and notwithstanding that he had had a race earlier in the day, Sea Comet finished at least as well as anything. Haeremai went well for a while and might be a fair sort. Favourite Beaten Troilus made the early running in the Waihi Handicap, for which Bisox was favourite. Bright Glow was in charge at the home turn where the field swung out and Bisox came through. In a good finish Bright Glow won by a neck. Dermod was a fair third and Anola fourth. Field of Near Champions? A really rough field, as flat racers go, contested the Hunters’ Handicap Flat Race, and the northerner, Lady Faye, by Day Cornet from Lady Vere, wound up favourite. Faye lay in behind Grand Lupin and Lady Acre most of the way, but three furlongs from home moved up to the front and then went on to win as she liked by five lengths from Pink Rose, with Grand Lupin, Pikimai, Flowing Bowl and Sea View next. Favourite*Wins Easily The Urenui Handicap proved a good thing for Wanderlust, who was favourite. He allowed Airtight and Flying Shot to make the early running, but he was in charge before the home turn, where he came on to win easily by a length from Onward, With Broad Acre, Resin and Sovena next.
