TE AWAMUTU BOROUGH The resignation of Councillor Montefiore was considered at the meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council, which took place on Monday. As the result of the petition from residents asking Councillor Montefiore to reconsider his decision, he had that day applied to the clerk to have his resignation withdrawn. The Mayor moved, subject to the legality of the procedure, that the request be acceded to. If the request was not in order, a resolution such as he suggested would indicate that the council was willing. This was seconded by Councillor Marshall. Councillor Spinley referred to the adverse reflections on other councillors made when Councillor Montefiore wrote out his resignation. In fairness tq the rest of the council he should first be asked to withdraw the remarks before the request was dealt with. In answer to the Mayor, Councillor Spinley stated that he was in sympathy with the motion as far as it went, but he would prefer not to vote. The Mayor stated that he did not agree with Councillor Spinley associating him (the Mayor) with supporting Councillor Montefiore’s attitude and remarks. The latter had been a useful councillor, and was practical, supplying an assiduous application to borough affairs. _ ... Councillor Gifford said Councillor Montefiore had not been fair to the council as a whole. He thought he should withdraw any incorrect statements. , , . ,» . At this stage the clerk stated that he had, as returning officer, Councillor Montefiore’s resignation in his hands. He referred to a section of the Municipal Corporations Act bearing on the matter of a councillor ceasing to hold office immediately he had '“feed his resignation in writing with the Mayor or town clerk.
