MEETING OF COUNCIL Headed by M. J. Penning, a deputation from the Milford Baptist Church attended the meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council last night to protest against the proposal to rescind the motion prohibiting Sunday play on the vcitohener Bark tennis couits. lne deputaUon held that church attendance would suffer were play allowed. It was decided, after a lengthy debate that Sunday play would not be allowed The bank overdraft of £11,794 at the end of July has been reduced by £6,816. Rates paid in to date amount to £6,902, including the sum of LI.oUJ, which has been collected on rates in The Commissioner of Ciovvn Danas wrote advising that the only cemetery site in the Waitemata County apart from that at Crown Hill is ten acres at the back of Birkenhead. The borough engineer has examined the Crown Hill site and reported that he couid not recommend any such scheme within the Wairau catchment area. A suggestion that a section of 40 acres in Archers Road was suitable for this rpmeterv was not adopted. In view of the action of the Birkenhead Borough Council disclaiming any liabilitv for expenditure ’incurred m the refuse destructor question, the lecrai and finance committee recommended that the borough solicitors advice should be asked on the sube<The election of Mr. E. G. Skeates, Mavor of Birkenhead, to the vacancy on the Waitemata Electric Power Board caused by the resignation of Mr J D. Morison was confirmed. * Objections to the £4,000 unemployment loan suggested by the council were received from seven Bayswater residents on the grounds that no data had been supplied with regard to the allocation of loan money. The bajs-water-Belmont Progressive Association lodged a similar objection, and further asked that one-fitth of any thucli money should be spent in Bayswater. It was decided to do this. A letter was received suggesting that tho houses in Beresford Street, Ba.) swater, should be officially numbered. It was decided to communicate with the Bayswater-Belmont Progressive Association with a view to securing their co-operaticn. The foundations of the Bridgeway Theatre were attacked by the flood of the Wairau Creek some time ago. Mr. A. Brown, manager of the theatre, wrote suggesting that the council should deepen the stream and prevent damage in future. The few yards between the end of the concrete at Bayswater and the new strip on the wharf are to be laid by J. J. Craig. Ltd., at a cost of £l4l. The allocation of the loan to be raised will be submitted to the Ratepayers’ Associations before being sent to'the board at Wellington. The council decided to support the candidature of Or. J. E. Close to fill the vacancy on the Auckland Harbour Board.
