RAIDING BROWN TROUT
KILLING OUT RAINBOW BAIT RESTRICTIONS (From Our Own Correspondent.) OHAKUNE, To-day. An interesting discussion upon the destruction of rainbow trout by their more vigorous brown relations took place at the last meeting of the Wiumarino Acclimatisation Society. Air. W. Henderson said it was a matter that wanted earnest consideration, and he would suggest that if restrictions were taken off as to bait and size of fish to be taken in connection with the brown trout, it would, perhaps, have a good effect in reducing numbers, and give a better chance of the rainbow becoming established. He would suggest that application be made to this effect, and that it apply to the whole district with the exception of the Alanganui-o-te-ao, the Whakapapa, and possibly the Wanganui River. The chairman remarked that he wished to see the brown trout reduced, but he did not consider the previous suggestion the most effective way. He proposed that application be made to the department that restrictions regarding the size of brown trout be removed, and that this be applied to all streams in the society's district. The chairman’s proposition, put to the meeting, was carried.
