AMATEUR BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP

HACKETT’S WATERLOO IS DOGGED BY BAD LUCK Press Association. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The meeting between Ilackett (Auckland) and Shanks (Wellington) in the New Zealand amateur billiard championship proved to be a keen contest, in spite of the disparity in the scores. All through the game, the balls ran badly for Hackett, and particularly badly at the finish. Both men played well, and the luck went to Shanks, especially in a break of 61. Shanks’ average was over 10, but he slowed up considerably and finished up a little over 8. He made another nice break of 73, including nursery cannons and red-ball play. Hackett’s best work was at the top of the table. The'final score was: Shanks, G 66; Hackett, 527. Breaks were made as follow: Shanks: 25, 26, 23, 28, 73, 25, 61, 24, 20 and 35. Hackett: 21, 28, 29, 36, 27. Clark AlcConachy, playing J. Besant (Auckland) in a professional friendly game of 500, on 200 break, made a break of 426 in 20 minutes. This was timed by Air. Albert Cohen, and is believed to be a world’s record for quick scoring without nursery cannons. The previous best is 500 in 21 minutes, including nursery cannons. AlcConachy’s break was wholly at the top of the table.
