NEW TRAM FARES
DISCUSSED AT ONEHUNGA CITY PROPOSALS ACCEPTED The Onehunga Borough Council last evening debated details of the proposed alterations of sections and fares on the tramway service. A letter from, the City Council stated that it would be necessary for a fresh Order-in-Council to be obtained, and for the oxisting deed of delegation to be varied in accordance with what may be agreed upon between the respective councils. This letter included the giving of three months’ notice of the alteration in such deed. Some diversity of opinion was elicited upon the subject of altered fares, particularly the prohibition of workmen’s tickets after 8 a.m., when many men did not commence work until an hour later. The Mayor, Mr. W. Coldicutt, observed that upon that point members would be astonished to learn how many persons who were not t>ona-fide workmen had abused the privilege, when they could well afford full fare, or pay for concession tickets. It appeared to him that under the proposed alterations Onehunga would not lose muclv as to the shortening of sections, but would gain in other directions. In the fares from the city there would be no material change excepting in the prices for concession tickets, upon which the City Council was under no obligation to make heavy reductions. In reply to Councillor E. Morton, the clerk said if the council refused the city’s proposals, and rejected the alterations, there was no power to prevent the City Council from ceasing to run cars beyond Royal Oak, and declining to continue the service into the borough of Onehunga. Finally it was decided to accept the proposals of the City Council, both as to altered fares and shorter sections.
