KING'S VISIT TO CROYDON

TALK WITH A NEW ZEALANDER On Saturday. June 25, the King and Queen paid a visit to the Croydon Gen- j eral Hospital on the occasion of the ! opening of the new wing, when one of j those little acts of graciousness, which ! the King delights in and which endear j him to his subjects, occurred. Mr|. Pennethorne, a V.A.D., of the i Cheam District, who attends at the j j hospital once a week, was standing ■ near a New Zealand bed in the Croy- I don Ward, when his Majesty ap- j 1 proached her and conversed with her ; for several minutes, especially noticing ! her 1914-15 and Victory medals, and i asking many questions as to her life ' in Egypt. Mrs. Pennethorne (nee Mil- I ler, of Napier, New Zealand), is the i | wife of Mr. James Pennethorne, who j I was district locomotive superintendent ' I of State Railways in Egypt, and lived j in that country about two years. They ; now live at Sutton, in Surrey, where they have a charming house and garden. Mrs. Pennethorne was one of the guard of honour to the Archbishop of Canterbury on his arrival to open the new wing.

SURVEYORS’ DANCE A very successful social and dance was held by the members of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors at Miss Johnson’s Hall, Omahu Road, last week. About twenty-five couples were present, Mr. and Mrs. Grierson acting as host and hostess. Music, cards and dancing occupied the evening, songs being contributed by Messrs. Sandford and Ramsey, Miss Wood acting as accompanist. An excellent supper was provided, and the evening ended with the rendering of the time-honoured “Auld Lang Syne.” RAETIHI NOTES PLUNKET SOCIETY , The monthly meeting of the Raetihi branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Plunket Rooms, Mrs. Sigley pre •• siding. There were also present Mesdames Cummins, Ashwell, Brown, Sandford, Datson, Boyd, Lynch and Miss Harris. Several matters in connection with the forthcoming bulb show were brought before the meeting. The schedule was revised and stewards for the various classes were appointed. The district nurse submitted the monthly report, which was as follows: — Raetihi, 4 new cases; total, 140. Ohakune, 1 new case; total, 139. Rangataua, 1 new case; total, 24. Horopito, 21 cases. Pokaka, 25 cases. Accounts amounting to £ 6 8s llrl were passed , for payment.
