HEALTH OF PROVINCE

MUMPS AT THAMES TYPHOID IN KING COUNTRY A total of 21 cases of diphtheria was reported to the health authorities from Monday to Saturday of this week. The number is the same as for the corresponding period last week. As before, the cases are widely scattered and no indication of an epidemic is apparent. The returns for the various districts are as follow:—North Auckland, 1; Central Auckland, 14; South Auckland, 1; and Coromandel-Opotiki, 5. An epidemic of mumps is prevalent at Thames. The headmaster of the Central School, Mr. A. J. Shepherd, states that the attendance at his school has been severely affected by the outbreak. The head teacher of the South School, Mr. C. E. Scott, reported that out of a roll of 372, there was a daily average of 303 pupils attending, the disparity in the figures being due to the prevalence of mumps. The presence of typhoid among Maoris at Te Rena and Ivakahi, 10 miles from Taumarunui, is now definitely established. In addition to the two natives already in Taumarunui Hospital, three more suffering from the complaint were admitted. Dr. W. B. Mercer is at present investigating the outbreak and ensuring that all precautionary measures are being taken.
