WAGES ON RELIEF WORK LABOURERS’ UNION PROTEST “Ye Gods! What have the workers come to in a land of reputed riches for the asking—but, in this executive’s opinion, a nightmare?” A strong protest against relief work wages at 9s and 12s a day was passed at the meeting of the Executive Council of the New Zealand Federation of General Labourers, held in the Trades Hall. The following resolution was carried una nimou s 1 y: • “That, this Executive Council does emphatically protest at. the wages paid to the men employed on relief works carried on by the Government and City Councils at the rates of 9s per day for single men and 12s, a day for maixied men, when then can get it. This Executive Council maintains that no man 'should be asked to work for such less rate than what is prescribed in the various General Labourers’ Awards. “The present situation lias been brought about by the Government bringing large numbers of immigrants into the Dominion without any prospect of employment. Consequently the labour market is flooded.” With no work procurable, the rest follows—men, women and children, hungry, cold and ili-elad. Ye Gods, wliat have the workers come to, in a land of reputed riches for the asking—but in this Executive's opinion a nigh tmare ?
