POLE-HOLE BORER

OPERATING AT OPOTIKI At the conclusion of the Bay of Plenty Power Board meeting- this week a demonstration was given of the Buda Hubron pole-hole borer. This is the. first machine of the kind to be imported into New Zealand and will be closely watched by other power boards. The machine is fitted with a 10 horse-power flat-twin engine, which revolves the boring apparatus, which at the same time is forced into the ground. After the revolving knife has penetrated about one foot of earth, a movement of a lever withdraws the instrument, and by centrifugal force the earth is thrown clear of the hole. The machine bored a hole six feet deep and two feet in diameter in five minutes. The same hole would take a good workman an hour, to excavate. When the men operating the machine become more proficient it will be possible to dig a seven-foot hole in three minutes. It is considered that the machine will be a great saving in time and money to the board. . The machine cost between £3OO and £4OO. It is fitted with four wheels and can be taken to any desired spot. The boring apparatus can operate at any desired angle.
