ELIMINATION OF LEVEL-CROSSINGS

COST A DRAG WORK BEING CONTINUED (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Although the heavy cost is imposing severe restrictions the Government is proceeding steadily with the elimination of the more dangerous level crossings by the erection of overhead ramps. The Prime Minister said in the House of Representatives to-day that a programme had been laid down but. on account of the cost, the department could not go more than a certain distance every year. The arrangement now prevailing was that the cost was to be shared by the Railway Department, Highways Board and local authorities concerned, and a number of crossings were being dealt with in this manner. Mr. Coates promised to give consideration to the suggestion by Mr. W. S. Glenn, Rangitikei, that level crossings be made approachable by bituminous road at least a chain in width.
