SLY-GROG SELLING ABETTED BY CLERK
SERIOUS VIEW TAKEN BY COURT; FINES TOTAL £IOO (From Our Own Correspondent.) TAUMARUNUI, To-day. Robert C. Innes, a clerk employed by Messrs. McMillan and Co., wine and spirit merchants, of Auckland, who were not implicated in the proceedings, was charged at the Taumarunui Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, on three counts with sending liquor not properly labelled to Taumarunui, and on three counts with sending liquor to the same place knowing it was intended for sale. Senior-Sergeant Lopdell prosecuted, and the accused was represented by Mr. W. E. Bate. Mr. Bate at first asked that all the charges be dismissed but one, but the magistrate expressed the opinion that Innes was receiving some sort of commission for sending in the liquor, and Sergean* Lopdell had objected to a penalty being given on only one charge. Accused pleaded guilty on all counts
After considering the matter the magistrate said he ought to make it clear that people outside should not be connected with slv-grog sellers. He imposed a penalty of £SO on the first charge of sending in liquor, and £25 on each of the other two similar charges. The remaining charges were dismissed.
