CANTEEN FUND TO AID UNEMPLOYED
WORKLESS EX-SOLDIERS GRANT FOR WAGES A grant of £1,200 which has been made available to relieve distress among ex-soldierg in the Auckland Province will not be expended by way of grants for food and clothing. The money, which will come from the Canteen and Regimental Trust Funds Board, will be available only as wages for work upon which the Returned Soldiers’ Associtaion hopes to obtain subsidies. The order of preference for this money, which incidentally has also to be distributed among eight provincial organisations, is: Married me with families. Married men without families. Single men with dependents. Single men without dependents. All ex-soldiers must present their discharges when making application. This is essential. ONLY FIFTH IN HAND Only one-fifth of the grant will be available immediately. Two-fifths will come to hand during the first week of next month. The remainder will be forwarded when required. The suggestion that the Canteen Funds Board should use the interest on the capital sum of about £200,000 held by it in giving immediate assistance to unemployed soldiers was made a few months ago by the Auckland associtaion and subsequently endorsed by the Dominion body. The board accepted the suggestion, in part at least, and is making a grant of £4,500 to the Dominion association. Of this amount Auckland’s allocation is £1,200 for provincial distribution.
