Hearne 110 not out. and Bates 49. Larwood, Tate and Freeman took wickets cheaply. . England had made 7 runs for no wickets (Hobbs 4. Sutcliffe 2) when stumps were drawn. The match began in dull and threatening weather on a soft wicket. Sibbles replaced Nichols. Jackson won the toss and Percy Holmes and Sandham opened to the bowling of Tate and Larwood. At lunch one wicket was down for Ci 9. The cricket was not exhilarating but it was sound and interesting. At the tea adjournment the score was 212 for four wickets. Hearne batted carefully and took 105 minutes to reach 50.
