CARLTON BOWLERS STILL HOLD EDWIN STARS

THE FIFTH WIN ROCKY NOOK BEATEN By Jack High. The constituent elements for ideal bowling are bright skies, a yielding sward, made softly pliable by a warm summer sun, and that self-same surface rolled to faultless perfection, al-. lowing the woods to run freely and sweetly with an extreme delicacy of touch. These are The basic conditions that gladden the hearts of all devotees to the absorbing game on the green. In other words, bowling cannot by any stretch of imagination be termed a winter game. It is essentially a game of the summer time. But in Auckland the warmth of winter afternoons, coupled with the seasonable opportunity presented to "iron out” the playing surfaces, justify a reasonable reflection of the enthusiasm of the summer months. Hence the game of bowls finds a place on the list of those games played in winter in the Queen City of the North. But this winter, even the few warm sunny afternoons tljat are usually scattered throughout the winter months, have been denied the trundlers on the green. The season has been, with isolated exceptions, one long, dreary round of wet days, with soggy, heavy greens, coupled with raw, biting cold, that is the complete negation of true bowling conditions. Saturday was no exception to this rule, so what might otherwise have proved one of the finest bowling matches of the season in the Edwin Stars competition, deteriorated into a game of inferior skill on the part of the challengers. The challengers on this occasion were an exceptionally strong team from Rocky Nook, which comprised White, Gladding,’H. Jenkin, Clarke. White is a particularly strong lead; Gladding, the popular secretary of the Auckland Centre, is well known as a good bowler; W." Jenkin had the honour of winning the singles championship in his club last year; Clarke’s high skill in bowling is evidenced by the fact that he won the Dominion championship singles last season. On paper, the team was therefore of great strength, which should have given the holders a game of the highest order, and comfortably disputed the right of the Carlton team —Bates, Deare, Kilgour. Fookes—to retain the Edwin Stars, which are so freely coveted by the many opposing teams. THE GAME

On the first head, White drew a toucher, while Deare on the other side placed a good second shot. The toucher remained as the scoring bowl until Fookes rested it -off for two. Carlton, 2—o.

Bates replied on the following head with a toucher, 3—o. Bates again came to light with two, and when the skips changed over the score for Carlton was reduced to one. In attempting to get the toucher off, Clarke drove his second an rS, third oft \ making the score 6-—O. The Rocky Nook team succeeded in leaving its skip two up on the next head, which was reduced by Fookes to one, 6—l.

On the fourth head, the Carlton team tailed to score, leaving their skip one down, which remained unaltered by the skips, 6—2.

The fifth head saw Rocky Nook again two up on the change over, and Fookes burned the head. On the replay Rocky Nook was not to be denied left two up on the change over, which remained unaltered, 6—4. On the sixth head the Carlton team left its skip two up, but Fookes, in attempting to draw another shot, played narrow and trailed the kitty to two of 6^ 0< Nook’s, thereby loosing two,

The seventh head saw the*change over two up for Carlton. Two more were added by Fookes, 10—6. From this stage on the Rocky Nook team fell away in play, living its skip up, on one occasion only. This failure ws evidenced in the following figures a 4,1, 2,1, 2,4, 3, 2-. This deterioration. in his team was too much for Clarke to balance who was not playing up to his standard and on the 15th head the game was therefore abandoned, with the total scores at 23 —11 in Carlton’s favour. NOTES AND COMMENTS The holders played well. Bates found his match in White in the early stages, but easily led in the latter half. Bates did some particularly brilliant work, which was warmly appreciated from the bank. Deare was noticeably good, and did excellent work. Kilgour had a day out of form. His usual strength was not forthcoming. But it was ably made up by the other members of his team. Fookes was in brilliant form, and made a great showing during the game, some of his shots being of a particularly brilliant character. This makes the fifth successive win for Carlton. The team displayed a very strong combination. As a lead. Bates adopts surprisingly aggressive tactics, which as a rule prove successful. Deare is a remarkably successful number two, and does excellent work. Kilgour is one of the soundest players in Auckland, and is a great asset to the team, while Fookes displays the best qualities as a skip. The Edwin Stars competition at this stage, therefore, presents the finest bowling elements and is attracting a remarkabily enthusiastic on the bank for this period of the year.
