Little Doing at Eden Park
A LIGHT RUGBY LIST With all senior games postponed on account of the Canadian-New Zealand Soccer test, a very light Rugby list was set down for Saturday, only senior B and junior grade matches being played. Two senior B grade games were set down for decision at Eden Park, but owing to the state of the No. 1 area, which is still badly cut up, it was considered advisable to cancel the Technical College Old Boys-Marist fixture. As a result only two grounds were in use, City and Watemata occupying No. 2, while a junior grade match, Grammar Old Boys versus Grey Lynn, was played on No. 3. With such a scarcity of attractions the attendance was naturally small. CITY v. WAITEMATA With Waitembata fielding a depleted team made up mainly of substitutes, the City-Waitemata game on No. 2 ground did not provide a very thrilling exhibition of Rugby. Following the heavy rain experienced in the latter part of the week, the ground was in a particularly greasy condition, open play being practically out of the question. The game was practically in the nature of a scratch game, but, despite this fact, was keenly contested. City early assumed the offensive and drew first blood, Cornaga getting across as the result of a transfer from Young received near the line. The half-time spell was not taken advantage of by the players, who changed over and immediately resumed the game. In the second half Hook scored for Waitemata and Crisp for City, the latter’s try being converted by Herd, the game ending with the scores: City 8, Waitemata 3. With th exception of one or two rare flashes of back play, the game was confined mostly to the forwards. MANUKAU V. UNIVERSITY In the game at Onehunga, Varsity had much the better of play in the first spell, and in the second put on two tries, Carr and Black scoring. Both kicks missed. Immediately after halftime Alban streaked along the line to score. The kick missed. This try was much disputed among the spectators, Alban plainly putting his foot over the side-line. As the line umpire did not see the incident because of the crowd, the try was allowed. Manukau brightened up toward the finish, but Varsity managed to keep them out. Varsity’s best players were Blakey, Babbidge, Stotter, Carr and Conway, while Lipscombe, Sturmer, Ingram and Brirnble were the best of the Manukau team. SENIOR B. The senior B match between Tramways and Otahuhu on Saturday was marked by hard tackling and very even play. The Tramways backs showed a slight weakness handling the greasy ball. The state of the ground was against really good football, but on the whole the game was very well contested right up to the finish. Otahuhu scored first with a converted try, which was followed by two consecutive tries scored by Tramways. Otahuhu scored another unconverted try followed by a penalty kick to Tramways. The game ended: Tramways 9, Otahuhu 8. Mr. Dudson was the referee.
