Spectacular Rugby at Palmerston

MAORIS AND MANAWHENUA GAME ENDS 24-ALL Press Association. PALMERSTON NORTH, Sunday. After a poor display in the first spell, the combined HorowhenuaManawatu Rugby team rallied in the second half of the game yesterday, and drew with the Maori touring team. In the second spell the game was one of the most spectacular that has been witnessed in Palmerston North for some time. At the close of the first spell the visitors were leading by 16 points to 5, and Manawhenua supporters were despondent over their team’s showing. However, a complete reversal of form characterised the second spell, and not only did the district team efface that substantial margin, but near the end of the game was in the lead. A last-minute try by the Maoris robbed the combined team of victory. The outstanding incident of the match occurred in the first spell. Falwasser intercepted a pass when Manawhenua was within 10 yards of the goal line. All the combined backs wore well up the field, and only Williamson, the Manawhenua fullback, stood between the Maori player and the line. Falwasser raced down on the fullback, followed by other members of his team. . Reaching Williamson, Falwasser kicked. Williamson turned, and a great race after the ball from halfway ensued. The fullback gradually gained, and won with but a foot to spare. Up to the interval the Maoris displayed superiority in all departments except the scrums. On the change-dver, however, there was a reversal of form, and the home team rattled on points. Excitement ran high when Warren touched down behind the posts, bringing the scores level. The spectators rose and cheered in a body when Anderson found another opening, and gave Manawhenua the lead. Time was almost up tvhen the Maoris swept down the field, and Harrison scored at the corner. The time bell rang before the Maoris prepared for the kick at goal. There was great cheering when the ball went wide, leaving the score 24all
